Each Abandoned house that Ive explored has a story, this one might be tragic. I spotted this house in the summer of 2004. Its located right in the center of a farmers field. Theres no roads that leed to this house, nothing that connects it to the main road which is rather strange. The land around it has totally been transformed into farm land. It wasnt easy to spot this one, the folliage and trees around it covered it up nicely. With the change in the seasons brings change in the crops. I didnt want to venture through a farms crop and get all mudied up so I waited til this weekend. What I found was a bit saddening. The entire interior burnt due to a massive fire. Will this house burn next weekend?

This was shot in Detroit, a city notorious for its wild and crazy activities on Devil's Night, the night before Halloween. On Devil's Night, kids used to soap windows, drape houses or trees with toilet paper, or ring door bells and run away. However, in the late 80s, Detroit started a new tradition of burning abandoned homes. One year the fire count on Devil's Night was around 700.

As I shot this photo yesterday morning, a Detroit cop pulled up and after asking me if I was waiting for someone (the only person I might be waiting for in this neighborhood around 8 AM would be a drug dealer or a prostitute), to which I said 'no,' and showed her my camera, she proceeded to get out of her squad car and post a sign seen thousands of times around Detroit: This House is Being Watched. It must have been a safeguard, trying to keep this house from being torched this coming Sunday.

This house is a likely candidate for the match, so I will revisit this site after Halloween and see if it survived.

BTW, I am not the sort of person who would start a fire myself, so I won't be doing that just for the sake of a picture.

This is the interior of Byberry. It's a psychiatric institution abandoned since the 80's. This is one of the hallways interconnecting the 40 some-odd buildings. The wind was strong that day. You can see the debris blown in through the windows. The place is as creepy as it looks here.

Note the green and yellow paint on the hallway. Psychaitric hospitals try to give patients something whimsical and uplifting. This was likely done sometime in the 70's, a decade that brought improved medicine and better treatment of the mentally ill. Knowledge was limited and patients were treated badly during the 40's and 50's both in this institution and around the country.

The haunted farm

I've been putting it off all summer but my walk today takes me to the haunted farm. A derelict building with no access from the road. This farm house and barn has been slowly crumbling back to the earth for many decades. It lies abandoned half way up the hill behind my house and is steeped in suburban legend. With wild stories passed on and embellished by the local kids.

Some say that the farmer went insane one night and shot his wife and two sons before taking his own life. Their spirits roam the farm land and can their presence is felt every time a door slams in the wind or a tree hisses as the leaves rub against each other.
As a nine year old you were very brave to enter the barn alone, past the "danger sign" which warned about structural integrity. The longer you could stay inside, then the more of a man you were, since it was only a matter of time before the spirit of the farmer would come to shoot you in the back of the head.

As you can imagine, it was sometimes quite scary to have such a place behind the house. And especially thrilling when, on a dark night I spotted light coming from the farm house on the side of the dark hill. I ran into bed and hid under the covers shaking like a twenty a day coffee drinker.

Today I braved the chilling perimeter and warning signs and enter the haunted farm on my own. I can't help but feel I was being watched.

Now people throw their trash there and the place is now a Mecca for deviant behavior. Drug addicts and pushers do business inside and gay couples have sex in the dark areas of this place.

Well, it is also perfect for a music video shoot for a gothic band.

Dedicated to Tataiana Cardeal,
this shot is taken from Kamal Abad village in Neyshaboor, which was emptied 40 years ago.
It belongs to the earthen architecture and when the farmers around tried to flood it five years ago, to bring the land under cultivation, this is why it is rapidly deteriorating.
I'm making a set for this and meanwhile working on the shots, which unfortunately would be the last shots of this amazing place.
